Operation Food Search in St. Louis, Missouri, is an Operation Frontline partner agency. Emily Farr, Operation Frontline AmeriCorps*VISTA in Missouri, recently hosted a grassroots fundraising effort called Empty Bowls that raised almost $6,000 to provide nutrition education classes through the local Operation Frontline program, nationally sponsored by Tyson Foods, Inc.
The Empty Bowls concept began in Michigan in 1990 by an art teacher who wanted to find a way for his students to raise money for a food drive. For an Empty Bowls event, local pottery students and artists donate handmade bowls that are then sold along with a simple meal (generally soup and bread) for a set price. Eleven St. Louis-area schools and eight artists donated over 400 bowls, and soup and bread were donated by a local catering company - Great American Corporate Dining - and by Whole Foods. Student bowls were sold for $10 each and artist's bowls ranged from $15 (for paper bowls) to $250 (for a HUGE bowl!).
Operation Food Search sent out letters requesting monetary donations and had donation boxes at the luncheons - and many people gave quite generously. One luncheon was held in the cafeteria of a multi-business office building, one was in a private corporate cafeteria of a large communications company and the last was at Whole Foods Market.
